Client: CalTrans / Neoplan
CalTrans realizes that the existing freeway network in California has limitations as we move into the future. The system was designed for a specific volume of traffic which is already overloaded, causing gridlock and traffic jams during the rush hours. Adding new systems such as trains and people movers is a long term solution. However, we also need to consider the short term solutions. We have one of the best freeways in the world, and our suggestion was to consider developing “road trains” that would use existing dedicated freeway lanes. These high speed tractors would remain on the freeways at all times and stations would be built to pick-up and drop-off passengers and cargo at designated stops along the main corridor using overhead connectors. Tractors would run on “auto-pilot” closely monitoring traffic patterns, road conditions and weather patterns.
